Festival of Trees 2016 at the Berkshire MuseumFestival of Trees at the Berkshire Museum and Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” on stage at The Colonial Theatre are two great ways to enjoy the holiday season in the Bekrshires!

There’s always lots to do and see in the Berkshires and the holiday season is no exception. Bright lights, colorful decorations, special events, and holiday-themed stage shows set the scene for a magical time of the year.

One popular and traditional event is the annual Festival of Trees at the Berkshire Museum now through December 31st, 2016.

The Festival of Trees is a Christmas Tree decorating event that businesses, schools, and other groups particiate. Each year, people compete to decorate their tree in innovative and original ways while also sticking to that year’s Festival of Trees theme.

This year’s theme is a salute to the silver screen. Currently, the Berkshire Museum exhibit contains over 100 trees decorated in celebration of classic cinema. You never know what you’ll see, the only guarantee is that you’ll be both entertained and bedazzled!

Another great Christmas tradition, Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol” is on stage all month at the Colonial Theatre through the Berkshire Theatre Group.

A timeless holiday favorite, “A Christmas Carol” is a mesmerizing moral tale of the redemptive power of Christmas. Watch as the cold-hearted miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, is given one last chance to reform by four very different spirits.

This classic story of redemption is filled with holiday carols and will hold you entranced in your seat no matter how well you know the story. Berkshire Theatre Group shows are of the highest production values, drawing talent from across the region. It’s highly likely you’ve never seen “A Christmas Carol” like this!

2017 Tanglewood Popular Artists Series Adds James TaylorThe 2017 Tanglewood Popular Artists Series has just added a number of legendary artists! James Taylor, Joan Baez, John Mellencamp, Indigo Girls, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, and Carlene Carter are all on this summer’s Tanglewood Festival lineup!

Tanglewood continues to amp up the excitement with these late additions to its summer series of rock, pop, and jazz concerts.

Of course, the big news everyone has been waiting for is the return of James Taylor to Tanglewood’s stage. Not that there is any real surprise: Taylor is no stranger to Tanglewood. As a matter of fact, this engagement will be the 25th since his inaugural appearance in 1974!

Taylor and his All-Star Band are scheduled to appear in the Koussevitzky Music Shed on July 3rd and 4th, 2017. Fireworks will follow the Independence Day show on the 4th.

Tickets for James Taylor’s Tanglewood appearances will go on sale at 10am, March 6th.

James Taylor is not the only artist who has been recently added to the Tanglewood Popular Artists Series.

Four Voices,” scheduled for June 17th, combines the talents of Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the Indigo Girls: Amy Ray, and Emily Saliers. The “Four Voices” concept has been in occasional existence since a benefit performance in 1991. Since then, the undeniably talented group of good friends have performed together off and on, up to this year’s Four Voices Tour.

John Mellencamp with Emmylou Harris and Carlene Carter are the other new addition to the Tanglewood Popular Artists Series.

Mellencamp burst onto the rock scene in 1979 with his hit “I Need A Lover,” which were followed a few years later by his hits “Hurts So Good” and “Jack & Diane.” John has continued his string of hits, albums, and concert performances to this very day. This concert, scheduled for July 1st, will be John Mellencamp’s first appearance at Tanglewood.

13-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris has not graced the Tanglewood stage since 1978. Known both for her talents as a songwriter and her incomparable voice, she has sold more than 15 million records. Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

Carlene Carter is the daughter of June Carter and Carl Smith. Straddling the line between country and rock, Carter began her career in the mid-’70s but didn’t see wide success until 1990 and the release of her fifth album, “I Fell in Love.” This concert will be Carlene Carter’s Tanglewood debut.

Celebrate Maple Syrup Season With A Visit To Ioka Valley Farm!

Ioka Valley FarmFebruary through April is maple syrup season. What better way to welcome spring than with a trip to a local sugar house, like Ioka Valley Farm in Williamstown, MA?

This time of year, the scent of maple is literally in the air. Sugar houses throughout the countryside are boiling down maple sap for syrup and the steam is heavy with the scent. It can be difficult to concentrate when you catch a whiff of that delectable, pure maple syrup.

Quit day-dreaming and take this seasonal opportunity to visit an actual sugar house! There are lots of maple producers dotting the Berkshires but one of the most popular in our area is Ioka Vally Farm in Williamstown, MA.

Ioka Valley Farm is known for a lot of things: natural, hormone free beef, pumpkins and squash, Christmas trees, and more. This time of year, however, they’re known primarily for their pure maple syrup, and specialty maple products.

Ioka Vally Farm has been a locally owned, Berkshires family farm since 1936. While they didn’t start producing maple syrup until the early 1990’s, their operation has grown by leaps and bounds. What began on the kitchen stove with just 13 maple taps has now grown to over 10,000 taps and two modern maple boilers!

During maple sugaring season, Ioka Valley Farms opens the doors of their sugar house. Visitors are encouraged to come check out the works, ask the sugarmaker questions, and enjoy maple samples.

They even converted their calf barn into a cafe or “Calf-A,” as they call it. During sugaring season, you can sit down to a meal of hot pancakes or french toast topped with fresh and pure maple syrup! Mmmmm!

Visit the farm, see the maple sugaring process, enjoy a delicious meal, and take a few items home with you from the gift shop. What a nice way to spend a lovely spring day in the Berkshires!

Visit the Berkshires’ Tallest Waterfall: Bash Bish Falls State Park!

$

0

Bash Bish Falls State ParkBash Bish Falls may be the most iconic and famous of all the waterfalls in the Berkshires. It’s certainly the highest, tumbling nearly 120 feet down a series of cascades, before being split in two for a final drop of 80 feet to the sparkling pool below. Stunning!

Unfortunately, Bash Bish Falls’ fame means it is also one of the most heavily visited sites in the state. This is particularly true during the hot months of summer when so many are on vacation and the allure of the waterfall’s cool spray is strongest.

Consequently, one of the best times to visit Bash Bish Falls State Park is in the spring. Not only are the crowds fewer during this time of year but the flow of Bash Bish Brook tends to be stronger, making the falls that much more dramatic. A real win-win!

Bash Bish Falls State Park is located in the town of Mount Washington, in the southwestern corner of Massachusetts, near Mount Everett State Reservation and Taconic State Park.

The drive to the park from Applegate Inn, our Berkshires B&B, here in Lee, MA is only about 45 minutes. The drive is so gorgeous, though, it always seems much shorter than that!

The park was named for the falls and contains a number of gorges supporting an eastern hemlock forest. Though there are trails and shelters in the park and fishing is allowed, the primary purpose of the park is to protect and highlight the falls. The hike to view the falls is a little steep but not at long or difficult. You’ll be there in no time and – wow! Just look at those falls!

The shape and beauty of Bash Bish Falls cries out to be further explored. Another trail exists that will take you to the top of the falls and some amazing views. Unfortunately, the trail can be quite treacherous and people have fallen here to serious injury – and worse. Further, no matter how inviting that pool may look, there is absolutely no swimming. Stay safe and explore the cascade from level ground with a camera.

Luckily, if you are looking to explore a bit, Mount Washington State Forest is directly adjacent to Bash Bish State Park. It offers 30 miles of trails, including the South Taconic Trail. Mount Everett State Forest is also right in the neighborhood. Here you can enjoy a picnic at Guilder Pond and take in a view spanning three states from Mount Everett’s peak.

Berkshires Arts Festival 2017Come out to the Berkshires July 1st through the 3rd, 2017 for the Berkshires Arts Festival! The annual festival attracts top artists and art fans from across the US and Canada for a weekend of art and crafts, live music, food, drink, and much more.

The Berkshires Arts Festival is much more than just some open-air arts and crafts show.

In the 16 years since its inception, the Berkshires Arts Festival has become one of the most respected annual summer art events in the country. It’s certainly one of the most prominent annual events in the Berkshires! 200 artists come from around the country to showcase their newest and best works.

The Berkshires Arts Festival is a juried event, so you know you’ll see only the finest works. Artists are selected based on originality of their designs, technical execution, overall aesthetics, and presentation. The open medium show means you’ll see a wide variety of works: furniture, jewelry, glass, ceramics, fiber art, paintings, sculpture, and more.

Attendees to the event will be able to peruse and buy art that strikes their fancy. More than that, you’ll also have the opportunity to meet and often chat with the artists. What a wonderful way to attach some personal history to a beautiful piece of art!

One of the other great aspects of the festival is its location: Ski Butternut! Ski Butternut is a popular Berkshires ski resort in Great Barrington. This beautiful mountain setting only adds to the fun of the weekend. Attendees will find vendors both inside Ski Butternut’s air-conditioned upper lodge as well as in tents around the lodge.

While the art at the show is definitely serious business, the Berkshires Arts Festival itself is a casual, friendly affair. Great food, live music, and plenty of activities for the entire family help maintain a relaxed atmosphere for casual collectors, serious art buyers, and looky-loos alike.

Perhaps best of all, if you miss this year’s Berkshires Arts Festival, blink and you’ll have another opportunity! The Berkshires Arts & Culture Festival is right around the corner as well scheduled for August 17th through the 20th at Eastover Estate in Lenox, MA!

Along with bringing more great art to the area, the Berkshires Arts & Culture Festival plans to offer a number of opportunities to improve your own artistic skills. Workshops and seminars scheduled for the event include relief printmaking, jewelry making, silk marbling, clay throwing, and more!

Out of Site! – Contemporary Outdoor Sculpture at ChesterwoodArt in the Berkshires is never far away and the warmth of summer brings out some of the best. Chesterwood is currently presenting “Out of Site,” a contemporary outdoor sculpture exhibition that no art lover should miss.

Chesterwood is a National Trust Historic Site preserving the country home and studio of Daniel Chester French (1850-1931). French is considered America’s foremost sculptor of public monuments. He sculpted the Minute Man monument in Concord and the the Lincoln Memorial Abraham Lincoln, among other works.

The 122 acre estate now serves as a popular museum and sculpture garden. The facility hosts numerous events and programs throughout the year, including an annual contemporary sculpture exhibition.

This year’s exhibition, “Out of Site: Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood” features the work of 14 artists. The challenge put before them this year was to develop new pieces or adapt existing ones for museum’s landscape. The pieces had to reflect the environmental, cultural, and aesthetic attributes of the sculpture garden grounds.

Some of the pieces take their cues from the natural world and dramatic outdoor setting at Chesterwood. Others explore different aspects of the home through built structures. The exhibit includes giant creatures, illusive forms in mixed media, and narrative displays that address the passage of time in our present day lives.

Out of Site artists include:
Roberley Bell
Colin C. Boyd
Matt Crane
Roger Bisbing
Chrissy Scolaro
Brian Kane
Michael Oatman
Portia Munson
Derek Parker
Deborah Zlotsky
Amy Podmore
Douglas Culhane
Matt La Fleur
Amelia Toelke

Chesterwood will be offering free walking tours of the exhibit and special programs with the artists in July and August. Visit Chesterwood online for more details.

The 41st Annual Josh Billings RunAground Triathlon

Josh Billings RunAground Triathlon 2017Come to the Berkshires this September for the 41st Annual Josh Billings Runaground Triathlon. “The Josh,” scheduled for Sunday, September 17th, 2017, is one of the oldest and largest bike-canoe-run triathlons in the country.

The Josh Billings RunAground Triathlon has been held in Southern Berkshire County every year since 1976. This makes it one of the oldest continuous annual triathlons in the country, second only to California’s Eppie’s Great Race, which is two years older. The Josh Billings Triathlon includes a 27 mile bike ride, a 5 mile canoe/kayak/SUP sprint, and a 6.2 mile run.

The triathlon starts off from the Price Chopper in Great Barrington, MA with a 27 mile bike race. The race takes the cyclists through scenic back country roads and 5 towns to Stockbridge Bowl in Stockbridge. Here the cyclists hand off their wrist bands teammates waiting to paddle their way through the second leg.

The paddle portion of the Josh Billings RunAground Triathlon is a 5-mile paddling sprint around Stockbridge Bowl (Lake Mahkeenac). Paddlers may use canoes, kayaks, or stand up paddle boards as their vehicle of choice. The race around the lake ends at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac where the paddlers toss their wristbands to runners waiting on the beach.

Runners catch their teammates wristband and strike out around the lake for the main gate of Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox; a little over 6 miles. Thousands of fans will be waiting to cheer at the finish line – then it’s time to PARTY at Tanglewood!

The Bash at Tanglewood includes live music, great food, awards, vendors, and a Kid’s Race to wind up the day. The annual Josh Billings Triathlon is always good time for both competitors and spectators alike. The race has a friendly, tongue-in-cheek feel that it gets from its namesake, Josh Billings.

Josh Billings is the pen name of renowned humorist, Henry Wheeler Shaw. Shaw, who was better known than his contemporary, Mark Twain, was born in Lanesboro, MA in 1818. One of his more famous sayings, “To finish is to win” is the motto of the RunAground and part of its fun-loving, not-too-serious attitude.

Visit the Berkshires’ Tallest Waterfall: Bash Bish Falls State Park!
